The Idiots Guide to Finding a Job in Israel
The Idiot's Guide to Finding a Job in Israel 49 In some ways, finding a job in Israel is very much like anywhere else. Except for the whole job search part. This is a guest post by Benji Lovitt of WhatWarZone. If you'd also like to guest post here on JobMob, follow these guest post guidelines. With the shekel's value continuing to strengthen, it's good times all around in the Israeli economy. A land known too often for politics and conflict is slowly becoming recognized for its hi-tech and innovation. With new opportunities all around, it's a hot job market out there and potential candidates can make or break their careers with their next job offer. But look out, Western immigrants- just because you came from a Fortune 500 company doesn't mean you're ready to play ball in the Middle East; there are cultural differences after all. Without further ado, I present to you The Idiot's Guide to Finding a Job in Israel. Where to begin? Before you're ready to land the dream interview, you better get your resume in order. Do know that whereas long gaps in employment are frowned upon in many Western countries, you need not worry in Israel. Interviewer: Ehhh.waht eez dees three month break een between jobs? Candidate: India, nu?! Interviewer: ONLY three months? What eez wrong weeth you? You may also want to fix any misspellings. If you are applying however for a position in menu or street sign creation, please disregard the previous sentence. 3 mistakes? You're hired! Ready to start searching? Great, let's go! Uh oh. Proceed with caution. Like the American hiring process which comes to a screeching halt between Thanksgiving and New Year's, Israel too has its slow season, taking place just before âacharei hachagim' (after the Jewish High Holidays) and lasting about 5 times as long as the actual holidays. Occurring in September and October, this phrase roughly translates to âyou have a better chance of swallowing a basketball whole than getting anyone on the phone'. Candidate: Ehh, ahr you hiring? Company Rep: I ehm soh-ry, we ahr veh-ry busy right now. Candidate: Why, are you about to go public? Company Rep: Ehhh no. Shemini Atzeret with Doda Tzipi. Her ketzitzot are makseem!!! Despite the âacharei hachagim' answer, you might get lucky. Typically, you can expect a job to be offered to you after either 1 day or 6 months. Getting your foot in the door So how does someone get an interview anyway? The Internet is a great place to look for jobs in the Western world but should be avoided in Israel at all costs (unless you are a freier.) It's all about Vitamin P here. (If you're looking in Superpharm, you obviously have none.) Looking for Vitamin P? Keep looking Vitamin P is short for proteksia or âhaving connections'. Knowing someone high up typically helps. Of course, someone can also be defined as the son of the brother of the girl who used to date your uncle's cousin. When questioned, you should pretend as if this person is the best friend you have ever had and refer to him as a âgever' (guy) or âach sheli' (my brother) at least 37 times in discussion. If you pull this off believably, congratulations, you just landed yourself a job. The Big Day Yikes! You're interviewing with the boss in 1 hour and you haven't a thing to wear! Take a deep breath and check your closet again. See those jeans? No, not the Tel Aviv pair with the hole in the crotch. The nice jeans- put them on (the other ones you can wear once you're hired.) For the ladies, cleavage is also encouraged in the Israeli job interview and workplace. Here's a typical office exchange: Worker: Hey, Dafna, what's with the revealing outfit? Hot date tonight? Sexy Co-worker: Ehhhhh no. Shareholders' meeting. Why? Those of you from other countries may be surprised to learn that there is no such thing as an inappropriate question here. Whereas questions about sexual orientation, religion, or family aspirations are grounds for a lawsuit in other countries, in Israel these topics are called âthe first 5 minutes of the interview' and are apparently encouraged. If you're expecting to be asked where you see yourself in 10 years, forget it. This is Israel, people- nobody knows what they're doing Friday night, you think they've made plans for 2018? Of course, you should fully expect to know someone in common with the interviewer. And if not, you will. Because even if you didn't get the job, there is roughly a 57% chance that you'll be offered a date with the CEO's daughter. Whether or not you accept, just make sure not to burn any bridges. You never know- you could be doing miluim (army reserve duty) with the interviewer 6 months later. RIIIING! Mazal tov, you got the job! We ll see you at 10 AM on Sunday. Wait, are you thinking about getting pregnant? About the author Benji Lovitt is a stand-up comic and writer. He blogs about his immigrant experiences at www.WhatWarZone.com. Both different, both good grad schemes and SMEs
Both different, both good grad schemes and SMEs Graduate schemes represent an important sector of the graduate job market, but SMEs offer exciting opportunities too. Try not to conflate graduate job with graduate scheme. There are plenty of organisations looking to hire capable grads, but without the resources and budget to marshal a high-profile recruitment campaign. If youre a savvy student youll consider both options and give yourself the best chance of securing a challenging role post-graduation. Graduate Training Schemes Graduate training schemes are typically well structured. Trainees complete a range of placements within the organisation (lasting anywhere from 2-12 months in a programme spanning 1-3 years), giving a great overview of the organisation as a whole and an insight into how the various functions work and interconnect. The big graduate recruiters place a heavy emphasis on training and development, combined with strong mentoring programmes and close supervision. Some companies will also assign a buddy typically a grad who has recently completed the programme. You may be itching to work independently and autonomously from the beginning, but you might have to bide your time. Dont expect to be PM on day one! One of the big attractions is the feeling of camaraderie with fellow trainees. Depending on the size of the company you could find yourself starting with a handful of grads, or considerably more. Not only does this give you a ready-made source of social support (a real plus point if youre moving to a new country/city) but also the shared experience of training, learning and working towards professional qualifications together. Theres no doubt that many students are attracted to graduate schemes because of status and prestige and this is a perfectly legitimate motivating factor! You can certainly reap the rewards if youre prepared to work hard. It requires very little effort to find graduate schemes they really are everywhere. You cant miss the presentations, skills sessions, glossy brochures and campus brand managers. We work with 98 of the Times Top 100 so there are plenty of jobs available on our own vacancies database and through other portals like TargetJobs, Milkround and graduate-jobs.com. The application process is pretty transparent and very well documented. It normally involves a competency based application form (possibly a CV and cover letter in sectors like law and banking) and is a multi-stage selection process including aptitude tests, a telephone interview and an assessment centre. It can be a good few months between application and job offer, with a start date in summer or early autumn following graduation. And finally, the entry requirements are quite rigid: most grad schemes (there are exceptions) will ask for a 2:1 and a certain UCAS tariff. If you have got one, but not the other, the chances are youll be screened out. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) Graduate training schemes represent a very small percentage of vacancies in some sectors and in others are almost non-existent! Think how many jobs in print (and digital) journalism exist in local newspapers or niche magazines, compared to the number of large national dailies. Consider how many small and specialist campaigning and charitable organisations there are compared with the household names, and IT jobs dont start and stop with Apple or Google. There are graduates in young and growing companies who talk with enthusiasm of the way in which they have been able to grow and develop a role according to their own interests and ideas, how there is a much more direct relation between their success in the role and the success of the organisation. Smaller teams and a flatter management structure can create opportunities to shoulder early responsibility, lead projects and influence decision making. Dont expect this to translate to a high salary though youll need to adjust your expectations and scale accordingly. If you are the only recent graduate recruit in an SME or start-up, you may enjoy the challenges of building up your own networks which can stretch beyond the organisation. You may no, make that will have to be a little more resourceful and flexible if you want to unearth some of the graduate opportunities within SMEs. Although most university careers services (Warwick included) are working really hard to raise the profile of SMEs, most of them simply dont have the same campus presence as the big players. Get the ball rolling by finding out how to start your career in an SME. Graduate jobs with SMEs are often advertised throughout the year with vacancies in the ones and twos, not hundreds. The application process is often less structured, with (typically) fewer stages and a faster turnaround. If youre really lucky you could find yourself employed within a week or two. They may also be amenable to speculative approaches. And finally, youre less likely to fall at the 2:1 hurdle. SMEs are open to applications from candidates with a 2:2, provided they show ample initiative and motivation.

photographer Morgan Day Cecil Career Coach JobJenny
Or, you could go it alone Meet blogger/photographer Morgan Day Cecil Career Coach JobJenny Surely, Im a believer that you can find your career passion within the walls of Corporate America (if you dont laze out or settle on some miserable, two-bit j-o-b). But Im also a giant cheerleader for those who decide to bag that route entirely and go it alone.Like Morgan Day Cecil, a friend and one of lifes great examples of living Mach II with your hair on fire.Morgan, by definition, is a blogger and photographer. But thats like trying to describe the Eiffel Tower as a sort of impressive bit of architecture. She also is a skilled web designer, travels extensively with husband and son in tow, and oh-by-the-way, teaches pole dancing fitness classes.I interviewed Morgan recently. Really, I wanted to see what kind of formula she uses to make it as a solopreneur. Heres what she had to say:Howd you decide that you were going to go it alone instead of working a corporate job?Honestly? My dad was the biggest influence. He always worked for himself. He was always around to take us swimming and waterskiing, and really to just hang out with us. I saw from an early age the freedom that comes with being completely autonomous and in charge of how you spend your days. Now, my dad worked very hard. Our whole family would come together and clean the apartment buildings he owned and help put pieces together (hes an inventor), but I saw firsthand the value that comes with a life thats not restricted to 9 to 5, and I knew I wanted that for my own family. Time is so much more important to me than money.Youve just launched a new personal development blog (MorganDayCecil.com). What is your goal with this project?I truly believe that life is meant to be lived bigger than most people are currently living it. I wanted to help people understand what it means to be alive. The blog offers tips on falling more in love with life and living each day with romance and adventure. Honestly, its as much for me as it is for those who follow the blog. I need constant motivation and inspiration to live life with an adventurous and romantic perspective. What can a job seeker learn by following MorganDayCecil.com?The blog can provide job seekers and those stressed about unemployment a great opportunity to regroup and focus on what theyre passionate about so that, in this next phase of life/career, they can make sure making choices that lead them to a life they love. Its about how to figure out what you want out of life, and what you want to do for your income. For those considering just going it alone, whats the scariest part? For me, its the insecurity that comes with an inconsistent income. For those working secure jobs with corporations, even if its a false sense of comfort, they tend to feel safer with that regular paycheck even when safe means unhappy. Thats something you must get comfortable with as an entrepreneur. You also have to be a big self-promoter. You could have the best product or offer the best service in the world, but no one is going to know who you are unless y ou give them many reasons and reminders. And, youve got to keep your focus; keep persevering without getting distracted or intimidated by what everyone else is doing.Best advice for someone considering building a career as a solopreneur?Learn. Start learning from people who are living and working in the world you want to be in. Get on social media, especially Twitter. Approach people, connect with them online. Ask them questions. Learn everything you can from those who have paved the path you want to walk on. My dream is to become a travel photographer. Im not yet sure how Ill get there, but right now Im studying everything I can about the subject from a place of pure enjoyment and curiosity. Theres incredible value in this. So, yeah.A peek into the life of someone doing things a little bit unconventionally, with seemingly major payoff. Shes not a zillionaire (yet), but shes making a living doing things she loves. And you just cant put a price tag on the value of a flexible career bu ilt out of personal passion.Morgan Day Cecil is a photographer/blogger with a M.A. in Philosophy. Her personal development blog (MorganDayCecil.com) aims to help you fall more in love with your life and live each day with romance and adventure. She daydreams about living in a land where lemon trees and avocadoes grow, but until then she lives in Kentucky, with her husband and son. You can connect with her on Twitter and Facebook.

Where to Find the Best Networking Events - Classy Career Girl
Where to Find the Best Networking Events Whether you are looking to build your dream career or start your own business, networking is one of the first steps on the path to success. Networking events make it much easier to network, but how do you find the right one for you? Set Your Networking Goals Before you sign up for networking events, first get clear on what what your networking goal is. If you are looking to learn more about training and development, donât go to a meetup for people with dogs. But, if you are looking to become a pet marketing expert, youd want to sign up for that dog meetup right now! Once you have a good idea of your networking goal, find a few different associations and events to âtryâ so you can find one association or membership group you really love. The value of attending networking events comes when you continually attend the events and see people each month. THAT is when you start to get to know each other and the referrals for dream career opportunities start rolling in. By attending an event only once, you meet someone, maybe exchange business cards and never see them again. You want to explore multiple groups so you can find the ONE (or maybe two, if you have the time) that you really enjoy and want to attend every meeting. You cant just turn up and expect to get referrals. Look for a networking group that focuses on building relationships, mentoring, learning and avoiding the âSell, sell, sellâ approach. Statistics show that most referrals come not from the first meeting within a group, but from second and third level referrals. Once you find the right group to join and you make it a priority to get to all the events on your calendar, look into leadership positions in the group to start meeting even more people. Here Are 6 Ways to Find the Right Networking Event 1. Google It Google networking groups, your industry and your location. Often you will be able to find websites who have listed a variety of networking groups in a certain location. For example, here is San Diego networking events for women. Also, try searching for womens networking groups in your location as well. 2. Ask Request informational interviews with people in fields you are interested in. Ask them what networking events they attend and join those. Post on LinkedIn in groups in your industry and ask what association you should join. 3. Look on LinkedIn Look on LinkedIn to see what types of groups people in your industry are part of. LinkedIn is your secret weapon. You can see the job history of careers that you really want and it will tell you all of the groups you need to be part of as well. You can be a spy and see what groups someone who has your desired job title is in. Join those and start networking! 4. Search Meetup or Eventbrite There are so many events that you can choose from. The two sites that need to be on your radar for networking events are meetup.com and eventbrite.com. You can find events for people with the same interests as you have and if they dont have an event yet, why not start one yourself! 5. Twitter Hashtags These days nearly every event has a Twitter hashtag. If you are at an event, its great to follow this hashtag to connect with people at the event. But heres the real secret: even if you arent at an event, you can still follow the hashtag and network with the attendees. We recommend following hashtag streams in your industry to find out seminars that are happening. 6. Your Dream List Make a list of your favorite speakers and authors and check out their websites for where they are speaking next. Who would you love to meet in person or hear speak? Donât be afraid to travel if needed! The best investment you can make is in yourself! What networking events are you attending? Maybe we can meet in person!
